New Glass or a New Door? Here’s How We Decide

The glass is usually the cheaper fix. The frame decides whether it’s the right one.

    Replace the glass.
Makes sense when The frame is straight, solid, and not corroded through.
What changes One panel, sometimes two. Everything else stays.
Time Standard tempered is often the fastest; ordered glass takes about 3–5 days.
    Install a new door.
Makes sense when The frame is bent or corroded, or you want impact protection the old door was never rated for.
What changes The whole unit, frame included
Time Longer: the door is ordered to your opening and needs a city permit.
We would prefer to forego a large sale than compromise the customer; we will not install a $3,000 door around a frame that only needs $300 worth of glass at the most. If the frame is really gone and a new pane is useless, we will let you know.

Sliding Glass Door Repair in Fort Lauderdale, FL: What We Replace

    Cracked and damaged panels

Broken glass results from, say, a falling chair, a flying storm shutter, and the neighbor's ball. We remove the remnants of the glass, clean the pieces of the frame, and provide the glass with new strong glass that fits the frame.

    Foggy double-glass panels

It becomes visible when there is a slight haze between the glass panes and then becomes visible in the form of water drops. No cloth will solve the problem, as we have a broken seal. That happens especially when it comes to south-facing sliders located over the channel, where the constant sun change is not favorable for seals. Therefore, we must replace the sealed unit while keeping the frame and the other panel.

    Cloudy edges on impact panels

When the laminated layer starts to separate, the edges of an impact panel turn milky or fill with tiny bubbles. That glass has to come out, and we replace it with laminated glass that matches the door’s product approval, so the door keeps its impact rating. If the frame has corroded along with the glass, a new impact glass door makes more sense than putting fresh glass into an old one.

    Impact-Rated Glass Upgrades

The city sits inside Florida's wind-borne debris region, and impact-rated glass is standard for most sliding door replacements here. If a panel's being replaced anyway, we size and install impact-rated glass to current Collier County code.

Sliding Glass Door Repair Cost in Fort Lauderdale

Panels exceeding the standard of 6’8" will cost more, and extra panels in the case of three- or four-panel doors will raise the cost of a new door. You will know the amount you have to pay to get a new door before making a purchase.

What’s in Your Slider Right Now? Three Quick Checks

You don’t need to be aware of what type of glass is in your door when making the call, but if you are interested or just want a better number over the phone, three checks can help:

Can You Just Put Impact Glass in My Old Slider?

Short answer: no. It’s worth knowing why before hurricane season.

An impact door is tested as a whole unit, frame and glass together, including how the glass is held in. Laminated glass dropped into a frame that was never tested for it is still a non-impact door, only heavier. In Fort Lauderdale that matters, because the city requires replacement exterior doors to be impact-resistant unless the opening gets shutters.

Hurricane Wilma showed what the difference looks like. When it crossed Fort Lauderdale in October 2005, high-rises took considerable damage, mostly broken windows, according to the National Weather Service. Many of the downtown towers that lost glass went up before Florida toughened its codes after Hurricane Andrew. If your slider is from that era, new glass alone won’t bring it up to today’s standard. The two honest options are shutters over the door you have or a new impact door.

“Never attempt to remove a broken panel by yourself. An extremely heavy impact panel may weigh in excess of the person that is carrying it, and broken tempered glass will continue to fall no matter where it is moved to. Leave it right where it is and avoid the area around it while you call us. Only trained technicians should touch broken panels and hardware, and our technicians fix panels for a living without the chances of someone needing urgent care.”
