Is Your Glass Railing Telling You Something?

Loose posts, cloudy glass, or corroded hardware aren’t cosmetic. Left alone, they turn into a fall risk and a failed inspection.

This occurs since the Gulf salt air penetrates hardware that cannot endure the conditions and the process of rusting begins from the inside out.

Railings for Deck, Patio, and Waterfront

Naples is located on the Gulf, and salt from the water affects hardware on some waterfront properties on a seasonal basis, but not yearly. For all exterior locations, including a seawall on Port Royal to the lanai located on the canals in Cape Coral, we use marine-grade stainless steel or aluminum fittings and either laminated or tempered glass because the availability of corrosion-proof materials is significant when working in coastal conditions.

Glass Railings for Balconies

The balconies of condos and high buildings have their own wind-load ratings, and they are stricter closer to the coast. In Miami-Dade and Broward, in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, the frameless system, which uses glass instead of support posts, has to pass the TAS 201/202 tests required for hurricane windows. Naples and Fort Myers belong to one less wide zone, but that does not lighten the duties of the engineers whose documents have to meet the regulations of local amp building codes.

Glass Railings for Stairs

Whether straight or curved, either inside or outside, there is always an adequate system for installation. The standard Florida requirements state that for commercial buildings, the height of the guard should be at least 42 inches, while for residential buildings, the standard height of a guard should be at least 36 inches, and for the project, we use the glass thickness of the minimum 1/4 inch.

Commercial Glass Railings

Storefronts, offices, rooftop terraces, restaurant patios — commercial glass railing systems in Florida need their own engineering documentation for wind load, with components and wind-load requirements documented for code compliance, separate from residential railing systems. We provide it.

Glass Railings for Pools

We install tempered or laminated glass with marine-grade stainless steel or aluminum hardware, since chlorine and pool chemicals attack fittings the same way saltwater does on waterfront properties. Frameless and semi-frameless systems are both available, so the barrier meets code without blocking the view of the pool deck.

How We Work

Get Our Service In 4 Easy Steps

From first call to finished repair — here is what to expect when you work with us

1

Measurement and Quote Offered at No Cost

You may obtain a free estimate over the phone or through our website. The technician will arrive on-site, assess the property, and verify that code requirements are being met in order to complete your project without cost or obligation.

2

Manufacturing of Glass

Glass is cut and heat-treated according to specifications. Manufacturing takes approximately 1-2 weeks to complete.

3

Installation of Glass Panels

The next step is to install the posts, base shoe, or standoff hardware, and the panels. All fittings must be secured properly. A minimum top rail is used in the installation of frameless systems. Semi-framed installation requires bottom clamps that allow for a top rail to be made. This method will be governed by your project requirements.

4

Final Check of Installation

All panels will be checked to make sure they are evenly installed and all fittings have been properly tested under load before the technician leaves the site of the installation.

Framed, Semi-Frameless, or Frameless?

There are three types of systems with three different prices and three different varieties of anchoring the glass panels using either completely transparent or partially transparent panels.

Framed systems provide a continuous metal track at the top and bottom edge of each panel and can carry thinner glass. This means that a framed system is the least expensive option and very easy to install and repair.

Semi-frameless systems hold the glass panel by using clamps at the base or a base shoe track together with a top cap rail, exposing the glass surface. This method is less transparent as compared with the frameless one, but at the same time, it is more affordable.

Frameless systems can anchor thick glass, typically between 12mm and 19mm, with the help of the base shoe or point-fixed standoffs, without the perimeter framing. The glass handles the structural load, and the clear glass ensures an unobstructed view from the surroundings. There is no top rail or visible frame, making it the most expensive variant of the systems and the one people have in mind when the term “glass railing” comes up.

However, it is not necessary to choose the fully frameless technology for every usage. A frame or semi-framed solution will ensure the same clean and modern look, especially indoors where hydraulic load does not matter much. Also, you can ask for low-iron glass for getting rid of the strong green tint of the standard glass.

Common Glass Railing Problems (and Why They’re Worth Fixing Fast)

Most of the time, when you receive requests for glass railing repairs, it’s not the problems with glass itself that are causing the trouble. Instead, problems with hardware prevail—loose posts, corroded brackets, and fittings that have become loose. Broken glass railings happen less often but are more serious—sometimes, broken glass railings need immediate repairs for safety issues.

Also, salt spray or corrosion can require replacing parts faster than many people think. Properly treated, this type of corrosion can be detected and repaired quickly.

Hard water stains can be quite different from salt spray corrosion. They create the effect of a permanent fog in glass but are easy to fix with regular cleaning before they etch the glass.

In Florida, the height regulations depend on building location. The buildings by water have different standards, and each is supposed to be approved for use.

“We’ve been setting glass across Florida since 2008—sliding doors, showers, glass railing, and storefronts. Structural glass is a different discipline. A railing has to hold up under wind load, not just look good, and that’s the standard every panel gets held to before it’s called finished.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking. Can't find your answer? Just call us.

The answer is yes. It is because tempered glass is roughly five times more robust compared to regular glass and breaks into large, non-dangerous pieces rather than sharp ones. For homes with kids, laminated glass is a better option because of an extra layer of plastic, which binds it together after shattering. Before using glass around kids, one needs to make sure that it is properly installed. If some parts are damaged, fix them immediately.
If a glass railing adheres to the established standards, it can be used as a swimming pool fence. Yet, it has to meet the swimming pool requirements, not only the standard ones concerning the width, as provided by the code. In Florida, it means that the height must be at least four feet, and the fence must not have spaces a small child could crawl or climb through, and there has to be a gate, which should open away from the pool, and it should be self-locking. We build glass railings accordingly, rather than to the minimum of 42 inches, which is applicable in some other states.
Most of our installations are done outdoors. When it comes to this, the type of hardware is more important than the type of glass. It is known that 2205 duplex stainless steel is much more resistant to seaside corrosion than 316 stainless steel, while marine-grade hardware helps to make the installation last even longer with bad weather conditions. When laminated glass or toughened glass is used, the system is well placed for stability on properties located along the coast. Does not become rusty or faded.
There is not much work to do in this case. You can just use soap and some squeegee to clean it, and it will not fade in the Florida sun. Do a regular examination of the hardware once a year, because the saltwater might get into the fittings quickly.
We do both, depending on the job. For most of the job, we make the glass and find all necessary hardware ourselves, but we can also install or repair systems made by other plastics. One team takes care of the job from start to finish.
Fabrication may take one to two weeks, depending on the glass type and size of panels. For a simple balcony, the installation will take one day or less. Installation of stairs and custom cuts will naturally take more time. Impact rated and uncommon glass will prolong the process. A full timeline will be provided at the quoting stage.
They should be replaced. When tempered glass breaks, it does not allow repair anymore. The posts, hardware, and adjacent glass remain in place. We inspect bordering glass first to identify if other panels should be removed as well. Replacement glass must be of the same type.
Sure, we do single-pane repairs. We come check the issue in person and tell the client how much work it will require to fix it. If it is a single panel repair, it usually takes between two and four hours. However, if the panel is impact rated or abnormal, it may require some waiting time.
Yes, we can do things like storefront, office, hotel lobbies, restaurant patios, etc. However, we will need to perform engineering calculations for the glass railing in Florida, which we provide for commercial jobs, starting with the installation and repair stage.
